Steve Backshall is a BAFTA award-winning wildlife expert. Complementing his astounding success as a television presenter, Steve’s career has seen him segue into an equally accomplished author, speaker and conservationist. His enthusiasm for the natural world, combined with his daring and adventurous nature, continues to inspire audiences of all ages.

Film Work

The Secret Life of Bees (Channel 5) is Steve’s latest work, released in May 2025. This stunning and revelatory two-part documentary demonstrates what it takes to be a beekeeper, as Steve experiences life as an apiarist for the first time.

Other recent work includes, Ice Age: A Frozen Planet (Channel 5), Deadly 60 Series 5 (BBC One), Killer Crocs and Killer Hippos with Steve Backshall (Channel 5). 2023 saw the release of Whale with Steve Backshall (Sky TV), Deadly Mission Shark (CBBC) and Steve and Aneeshwar Go Wild (CBeebies). Steve also co-presented the 7-year documentary project, Our Changing Planet (BBC One), which highlights the fight to save our planet’s most threatened ecosystems. In 2022, Steve came face to face with the world’s deadliest creatures for Deadly Predators; a new line of the award-winning Deadly 60 franchise. 2021’s highlight was Shark (Sky Nature), which saw Steve dive with a variety of sharks; the goal being to debunk the myth that all sharks are dangerous.

Previous major TV credits include Blue Planet Live (BBC One), Big Blue Live (BBC One, PBS), Expedition with Steve Backshall (Dave), Wild Alaska Live (BBC One, PBS), the Lost Land series (BBC One), The Really Wild Show (CBBC), Fierce (ITV), Strictly Come Dancing (BBC One) and Emmy-nominated Expedition Borneo (BBC One).

Steve fronts the hugely successful CBBC Deadly series, which started with Deadly 60 and now includes Deadly Pole to Pole, Deadly 360, Deadly Top 10, Deadly Art, Deadly Dinosaurs, Deadly Animal Showdowns, DIY Deadly, Deadly 60 on a Mission, and most recently, Deadly Predators and Deadly Mission Shark. In 2011, Steve received a BAFTA for Best Children’s Television Presenter for his work on Deadly 60, the series itself winning a BAFTA for Best Factual Series.

Tours

Steve has completed several sell-out tours across both the UK and Australia. His most recent theatre show, Ocean, took place in January 2025, receiving rave reviews across Australia. The live event was a fantastic opportunity for fans of all ages to dive deep into the magical world beneath the waves.

Steve will be back this autumn 2025 with his new UK tour, Deadly 60 Live. The show will see Steve tackle daring stunts and mind-blowing experiments, as he shares with audiences some of the secrets of the world’s most formidable predators.

Speaker

In addition to countless sell-out tours, Steve is also an incredibly experienced and highly sought-after speaker. Steve has spoken at corporate events, international conferences, science festivals, trade shows and bespoke masterclasses, to name just a few.

Author

Steve is a prolific author, with a range of books extending from children’s fiction to adult non-fiction. His two latest adult works are Deep Blue and Wildlings: How to Raise Your Family in Nature, the latter co-written with his wife, double gold Olympic medallist Helen Glover.

One of Steve’s most successful children’s fiction works is his four-part children’s adventure series, The Falcon Chronicles, which consists of Tiger Wars, Ghosts of the Forest, Wilds of the Wolf and Shark Seas.

Conservation and Charity Work

Steve supports several charities both in the UK and abroad. He is an ardent conservationist and believes strongly that getting children outdoors at an early age is vital in encouraging them to appreciate and respect wildlife and the environment as adults.

Interests

Steve is a real-life all-action hero whose leisure pursuits include mountaineering, scuba diving and kayaking.
